I started to turn bowls as a response to a creative need. Years ago I had worked in different woodworking shops making cabinets and furniture. Eventually I started to design and make my own pieces. At that time I experimented quite a bit with different surface treatments, as well as combining different materials (slate, metal, formica...) with the wood. After a five year break from woodworking I felt I missed the contact with wood and decided to try and do some turning as I was in no position to invest in all the machinery necessary for furniture making.
Quite by accident I started painting some of the surfaces of the bowls. In retrospect I see it as a continuation of the surface treatments with the furniture. Presented here are some of my pieces. Though I have had positive responses from people here in Spain I do feel quite isolated as a woodturner in the sense that there is no tradition of artistic turning here as there is in the U.S., England, or Australia for example.
The fact that I live in a near desert environment certainly contributes to my difficulties as far as material availability goes. I also decided to only use wood that has been certified or that I know has come from a sustainably managed forest. Again a condition that narrows my options but allows me to act according to my value system.
Thanks very much for your interest in my work, I appreciate it. |
